Kids Can Featured on WSVN News

On Sunday Dec 8, 2013, WSVN ran a terrific news report that aired during their evening news about the Kids Can and Houses for Change event held earlier that day. More than 50 Kids Can kids, ages 1 to 16, gathered at the David Poznack Jewish Community Center in Davie to show the spirit of the holidays by helping to those who need it the most: homeless families in our community and nationally.

Each child created a “House for Change” house-shaped collection box that they will fill with change to raise money for two nonprofits that help homeless families: the Broward Outreach Center and Family Promise, the national sponsor of Houses for Change.

At a young age, these children are learning and practicing the values and habits of charity, altruism and saving. “We want to raise money to help kids who don’t have the opportunity to do what we do,” said Board President Logan Bratter, age 7. Logan’s collection box had a Heat logo on one side and hand-drawn flowers on the other. He’s hoping to collect at least $100 with his box. Visit our Gallery page to see the Kids Can kids’ beautiful box creations, plus pictures from the entire event.

Since its launch a year ago, the nonprofit Kids Can Foundation has raised nearly $10,000 for charities – and that is not counting the money these kids will collect in their Houses for Change boxes.

Houses for Change was conceived by Mark Wasserman of Boca Raton, Florida as a result of his volunteer work helping homeless families at a local Family Promise chapter. For creating and promoting Houses for Change, he has been nominated for the Presidential Citizens Medal, the second highest civilian award in the nation. The winners will be honored in a White House ceremony later this year. To learn more about this fun, educational project, visit www.housesforchange.org.

Special thanks to WSVN for letting the community know that Kids Can kids are making a difference.
