Young At Art Museum’s 9th-Annual Recycled Fashion Show

Decades Restyled! was the theme for Young At Art Museum’s 9th-Annual Recycled Fashion Show on Friday, November 14 at the Museum.

Proceeds from Decades Restyled! will be used to support Young At Art’s teen leadership and other pioneering programs for underserved and at-risk youth.

The teen designers looked back at past decades and discovered what challenges and achievements impacted earth’s environment, what natural disasters have changed the way natural resources are protected worldwide and how recycling as a sustainable practice has had an effect on daily life. The Recycled Fashion Show challenged participants to incorporate all their findings into original wearable art, made from recycled materials such as metallic mesh, newspaper, cardboard, egg cartons, canvas, remnant fabric, bottle caps, recycled plastics and splatter paint.

The high-energy event featured music; hors d’oeuvres by Whole Foods Market Plantation and Pembroke Pines; libations by Onli Beverages; a swag bar by Yelp Broward-Palm Beach; a recycled jewelry-making station by Levinson Jewelers; nail art by Kaizen Beauty Academy; “up-cycled” décor by IKEA Sunrise and one-of-a-kind, edgy clothing designs showcased by teen models during a supercharged New York-style runway show.

Renowned fashion/image consultant and author Mary Giuseffi, who has appeared on Oprah, 48 Hours, The Montel Williams Show and ABC News, was the emcee for the evening.

Teen designers put in more than a hundred hours of work to take their designs from concept to runway. These teens from diverse backgrounds came together in collaboration to explore their inner creativity. The cooperative life lessons learned are as important as the spectacular evening where they enjoy the spotlight.

Designers for Decades Restyled! included girls from Young At Art Museum’s American Express Teen Leadership Program and the PACE Center for Girls, which provides girls and young women with an opportunity for a better future through education, counseling, training and advocacy. PACE has been a partner with Young At Art for several initiatives including the Recycled Fashion Show and the self-esteem building program, Girls ‘N Power. The young designers work with Sharon Ali, creative director, Scarlet Letter Productions, to learn the fundamentals of the art of fashion design. In an effort to support these aspiring teens, Kids Can donated sewing machines to help create the gorgeous designs. Kids Can once again proved that Kids CAN make a difference.
